Discover the Beauty of Bonito Lake: Reopening for Fishing on August 30, 2024

A Long-Awaited Return to Nature

Get your fishing gear ready, adventure seekers! Bonito Lake is reopening for fishing on Friday, August 30, 2024. After years of restoration and anticipation, visitors are welcomed back to this stunning natural oasis, inviting everyone to enjoy a day of peaceful angling amid beautiful scenery.

Nestled in the picturesque Sacramento Mountains just north of Ruidoso, Bonito Lake has long been known for its crystal-clear waters and serene surroundings. However, the lake has been off-limits since 2012 due to the aftermath of the Little Bear Fire, which caused severe erosion and flooding that filled the lake with gravel and debris.

Over the past decade, the City of Alamogordo, which owns the lake, has been working hard to restore Bonito Lake and ensure it is safe and beautiful for visitors. With the completion of sediment catchment basins to protect against future erosion, the lake was refilled in 2023, bringing new life to the area and rekindling hopes for its reopening.

Reel in the Fun: Fishing Only at Bonito Lake

Starting at sunrise on August 30, 2024, anglers of all ages are invited to experience the joy of fishing at Bonito Lake. Whether you're an experienced fisherman or a beginner looking to try something new, Bonito Lake offers the perfect setting for a memorable day of fishing.

Please note that while fishing is back, all other recreational activities at Bonito Lake and properties along the Rio Bonito remain restricted for now. This measure ensures the continued safety and preservation of the area as restoration efforts progress.
