Guided Hike at Fort Stanton Historic Site & Snowy River Cave National Conservation Area

Explore the scenic landscapes and rich history of Fort Stanton Historic Site, nestled in the heart of Lincoln County—famed for its ties to Smokey the Bear and Billy the Kid. Join us for a leisurely 2.5 to 3-mile hike through the picturesque grounds, surrounded by the Snowy River Cave National Conservation Area.

What to Expect:

Nature and History Combined: This intact frontier fort's fascinating history can be explored while enjoying breathtaking views of the Sacramento, Capitan, and Vera Cruz mountains within Lincoln National Forest.

Scenic Trails: Follow sustainable hiking trails winding through open meadows, juniper and pinon woodlands, and subtle canyons. The hike features minimal elevation gain (approximately 100 feet) and includes side stops for immersive storytelling about the cave system and its background.

After the Hike, you can explore the grounds and buildings on your own. Optional lunch at Oso Grill in Capitan is also available.
