Fort Stanton Historic Site invites community members and visitors alike to join a special Park Day volunteer event on Saturday, May 3, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., commemorating the site’s 170th anniversary. Volunteers will help with trail maintenance and clean-up around areas reflecting the site’s varied past, enhancing accessibility and preserving the landscape for future generations.
Founded in 1855, Fort Stanton has served many roles over the years—including a Civil War and Territorial military garrison, a tuberculosis hospital, and a World War II internment center. As one of New Mexico’s most intact historic forts, it remains a powerful place to reflect on the layers of regional and national history.
Participants should wear appropriate clothing, sturdy shoes, and a hat, and bring drinking water.
