Hubbard Museum of the American West [PERMANENTLY CLOSED]
Please note: The Hubbard Museum of the American West in Ruidoso Downs is permanently closed and no longer open to the public.
Located in Ruidoso Downs, the museum was once a cherished destination for those seeking to explore the art, history, and cultural heritage of the American West. For years, it housed a notable collection of Western art, wagons, and Native American artifacts that inspired curiosity and appreciation for our region’s rich legacy.
While the museum has closed its doors, one iconic feature remains: the “Free Spirits at Noisy Water” sculpture installation. This breathtaking outdoor artwork is adjacent to the former museum and features eight bronze horses running through the natural landscape. Designed, sculpted, and engineered by renowned artist Dave McGary, the installation is a lasting tribute to the power and beauty of the American West. Did you know that each horse weighs between three and five thousand pounds? The surrounding park continues to be open for visitors to enjoy.
Ruidoso continues to offer a variety of unique cultural experiences, art galleries, and historical attractions that celebrate the spirit of the West. We invite you to explore other local points of interest, including Fort Stanton and Lincoln Historic Site, Spencer Theater for the Performing Arts, and the Wingfield Heritage House Museum, a lovingly preserved homestead offering insight into early life in Ruidoso.
We appreciate the role the Hubbard Museum played in our community and thank all who supported it over the years.
